Spain’s Beach Destinations

Spain’s extensive coastline and plentiful sunshine makes it the ideal destination for a truly fantastic beach holiday. Following are a few of the many Spanish beaches worth a visit, for their popularity or for their unique features. Whether you prefer quiet idyllic beaches with rocky outcrops, waters decked with coral reefs or a beach with a happening social scene, Spain is the right place to look.

Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol offers a vibrant beach life for those who are looking for an energetic, non-stop social holiday. The area spans the South coast of Spain and boasts of fine sand and warm seas. The beaches are usually busy, as the Costa del Sol is one of the most popular beach destinations in Spain, especially with visitors from the UK. Some of the most well known and well developed resorts are Marbella, Málaga and Torremolinos, and though these areas are quite built up and prone to traffic, the volume of accommodation available makes it easy to find a place to stay and one can often benefit from last minute specials.

Costa Blanca

This stretch of coastline is named for its beaches of white sand. The sea is clear and a fantastic hue of true sea green. The Costa Blanca is adjacent to the city of Valencia, not one of Spain’s most scenic destinations due to its industrial focus. The year round sun more than makes up for this though; with its dry, hot climate, the South Eastern coast of Spain can practically promise beach weather every day of your holiday. Two of the well known resorts are Alicante and Benidorm.

Costa de la Luz

Situated in South west Andalucia, the Costa de la Luz translates to “the Coast of Light “; perhaps a reference to the abundance of sun in this part of Spain. Costa de la Luz offers long sandy beaches and deep blue Atlantic Sea. The beaches here offer a quieter alternative to the Costa del Sol and are within easy reach of Seville and Cadiz, two Spanish cities with a rich heritage and historical sites to visit.

Costa Verde

The Costa Verde or green coast, situated within the province of Asturia, offers a different climate to the more arid regions of Spain with cooler temperatures year round and higher rainfall, which contributes to the lush surroundings and gives the Costa Verde its name. Its dramatic, rocky beaches and proximity to historical architecture and sights make it a must for a visit from those who prefer to holiday a little off the beaten track.

Tapas bars such as those in the Calle Zorrilla and Calle de la Palma area serve fantastic deep fried anchovies and baby squid at inexpensive prices. For fine dining, go to Calle San Félix and visit the Restaurante El Faro.

Different websites and portals can cater to your needs.

There is no doubt that a lot of times traveling by train will be cheaper in Spain as compared to the long distance travel in any other country. In fact, charges of train travel in Spain are nearly half the price of that in Germany or France. At times, train travels in Spain can also be extremely luxurious, especially if you are going for La Robla train tour. Luxury packages from Bilbao to Leon are also available.

Train travel in Spain also takes very little time, particularly at the Madrid-Barcelona AVE and Madrid- Seville Road. Inter rail passes and Eurail also makes travel cheaper in Spain. There are large numbers of discounts that are offered by these trains and the facilities they offer are also excellent but while choosing to take it you need to be very wise.

The ticket booking facility is also easier than that of booking the bus. There is only one main company that caters to different services. You do not have to keep on looking for services. Trains are also facilitated by lavoratory facilities unlike that of buses.

You can easier work by taking help of an interactive map that contains all the train routes in Spain, especially that of rail Europe. Real euro offers cheap rail passes in whole continent. Real euro offers maps for most of the European train routes.

Traveling by train also has some disadvantages in Spain. At times these tickets are not so cheap and travel is also not quick always. Sometimes you also need to pay extra. A lot of times you don't also get direct routes and you end up wasting a lot of time. At times it also becomes difficult for you to make sure that the service of which train should be used. Although there are varieties of services, but the scenario sometimes gets very confusing. The situation is complicated towards the north and eastern parts of Spain. Price comparison and a good study of all routes can make train travel suitable for you.

The place is actually connected to Spain but has remained a British territory since a very long time. This means that one needs a passport to visit this place.

Gibraltar was made due to protrusion of an enormous limestone catering to the best and most incredible views that one can ever have across the sea to words Africa. The height of the rock is about 412 m that corresponds to 1400 ft.² above the sea level. To reach at the top of this rock you do not have to indulge in trekking or climbing. It takes approximately 6 minutes to reach the viewpoint over the rock by the cable car ride.

Gibraltar is known to have five different and marvelous beaches named Catalan Bay, Eastern Beach, Sandy Bay, Camp Bay and Little Bay. Though Catalan Bay, Sandy Bay and Eastern Bay have soft sand, Camp Bay and Little Bay are known to be rocky beaches. A number of water sports are popular around those parts of water where Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic Ocean meets. Scuba diving courses and sailing schools help in familiar rising visitors with knowledge about various shipwrecks that took place around the rock. Fishing and windsurfing are quite popular in the area.

St. Michael's Cave that is present towards the upper part of the rock should not be missed. The area constitutes a colony of semi-wild apes. We can have a great time clicking some of these species. Some illustrations of the cave has been mentioned in the famous book Roman Pomponius Melia and a lot has been described about its tremendous history. The cave is present within the nature reserve of the upper rock and you need to buy a ticket in order to find and access to the cave.

Great Siege Tunnels - it was during the great siege that took place between the years 1779 to 1783, these tunnels were made using hammers, black powder charge, shovels and chisels. These tunnels are also present within the nature reserve and you can see army paraphernalia, ration boxes and canons always on display here.

Whale & Dolphin Watching -around three different species of the dolphins can be seen in Gibraltar. You can also go over a whale and dolphin watch boat trip. This trip takes about 90 minutes and takes visitors to the natural habitat of whales and dolphins which can be seen swimming and playing alongside the cruise.

Gibraltar is blessed with a temperate climate and is a great place to spend vacations.

Of course, you have to pass through narrow roads to reach this church. The most revered place in the church is the ‘Balcony of Vega Baja’. In this place, the visitor to the church asks for the help of the Saint. Saint’s feast is held during 12th to 16th of August every year. Just climb the mountain adjacent to this church. This place presents the most spectacular view of the places surrounding it. Just at the top of the mountain, there is another church.

Castle:

As you complete visiting the church at the top of the mountain adjacent to Saint Martin Church, you can also visit the castle located just by the side of the church. This is called the Castle of Callosa. According to archaeologists, the hermitage was built at the top of the mountain for the purpose of defense.

Singers of the Dawn:

This is one of the oldest male singing groups who are quite religious and they are the people who have great religious beliefs. These traditional singers conduct music during dawn every month on first Sunday and this group has been very popular throughout Spain.

Places of interest in Spain – Cadaques

Perhaps Spain can be called the home town of Mother Nature and the birth place of great works of art and architecture. Every place one visits in this country again and again drives home this point. Whatever place a tourist visits in Spain is renowned for its beauty, a unique history behind the place and many places of worship like chapels and churches, and places of learning like museums, etc.

This is true of Cadaques, which is a province of Gerona. This small town is separated from the rest of the country by the great mountains Puig Bufadors and Pani Puig. In fact this isolation has become a blessing to Cadaque for the simple reason that many tourists prefer this isolated
picturesque land locked in the midst of mountains and overlooking the great Mediterranean Sea. Many tourists are fascinated by this great town.

Places of interest:

Casa Museo Salvador Dali:

This great museum inaugurated in 1997 contains the works of renowned artist Salvador Dali. Some of his great paintings are on display in this museum. The landscape around the museum is just marvellous. There is a swimming pool which adds glitter to the landscape. The museum has a reading room, library, garden, workshop, etc. It is certainly an ideal place for art lovers and also for those who have a fascination for landscaping.

Santa Maria Church:

This exquisite church is located in the old town. This 17th century church is built in the center of the city. The charming roads leading to the church adds to the splendor of the church. It is of Gothic architecture with an octagonal top.

This imposing building is something that should never be missed by any tourist.

Music festival:

Every year a music festival is held in Cadaque. A large group of musicians, conductors, soloists, composers, and music lovers congregate during this festival. Perhaps the people of Cadaque love music much more than any other form of art, that’s why several bands or orchestras hold free concerts, even in the churches.

National park:

This large park covers about 11,000 hectares of land and attracts several visitors every year. Many of the rarest species of trees are found here.

Beach:

There is a lighthouse in this beach. It also has many coves and very small islands. It also has flora and fauna of the rarest varieties. Some famous Hollywood movies have been shot on location on the beaches of Cadaques. This serves to attest to the fact that Cadaques is a favorite of the tourists.

Places of interest for tourists in Spain – Tarifa

If you are an adventure lover, just go to Tarifa. This small town is located along the coast where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean. This town can be reached through Malaga and Seville. Tarifa’s nearest airport is Jerez. There are several important and beautiful places to visit by a tourist in Spain, and Tarifa is one of these.

Its geographic location beside the two mighty oceans is certainly an ideal spot for holidaying.

What to do in Tarifa

This place is most ideal for water sports like wind surfing. The beach is quite windy and visitors should be beware of the great sharks that had been seen gathering offshore.

So, windsurfing in this environment will certainly be exciting and suspenseful. Apart from wind surfing there are other water sports and activities like kite surfing, boating, fishing etc.

Those who are beginners in windsurfing can enroll in a training course. There are many windsurfing training schools in Tarifa.

Those who are interested can just go around this small city and inquire where they can find one of these schools.

If you are not interested in windsurfing and do not want to take risks, you can find other things to do to enjoy your stay. You can spend the time playing other games or take a stroll on the long beach.

Ah! There is yet another interesting event: just watch the whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. There are many shows arranged; just ask the tour operators how to get there.

Visit the historic church of San Mateo. This church and the adjacent buildings are believed to have been constructed in the 16th Century. Don’t fail to visit the Arab Castle.

This is one of the oldest castles and is believed to have been built in 960 AD. History says that Caliph Abderrman III ordered the construction of this castle.

The archeologists say that this castle was built on the remnants of a fort built during the Roman times. Jerez gate is another sacred place to visit in this village.

While in Tarifa, make it a point to visit the Paleolithic carvings in the Cueva del Moro; this is a cave estimated to be around 18000 years old. It is believed to belong to the Solutrean civilization.

These unbelievably beautiful works were explored by Lothar Bergmann in 1995. An interesting fact about the carvings made on the rock is that most of the figures depicted are horses.

Take a walk on the narrow cobbled streets of the village. The village is full of jasmine flowers and most of the buildings have wrought iron gates, which are representative of traditional gates in this historic place.
